Early users endorse first milestone of the LexisNexis(R) customer collaboration and innovation initiative

NEW YORK, Aug 05, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Since the introduction of Lexis(R) for Microsoft(R) Office earlier this year, legal professionals are expressing excitement for this first-of-its-kind solution that integrates sources of valuable legal content directly within the trusted MicrosoftOffice desktop applications they use every day. LexisNexis has been installing the solution for a growing number of its customers since spring, and announced today that the solution is now broadly available. Early users of Lexis for Microsoft have provided overwhelmingly positive feedback.

"Lexis for Microsoft Office is a great concept. It helps save time when researching or validating briefs from opposing counsel," said George Hampton, a law firm partner who served as one of the beta testers for Lexis for Microsoft office. "In the past, you'd have to write the citations on a piece of paper and then visit Lexis.com to look each one up, one at a time. Now, you don't have to manually input citations, Lexis for Microsoft Office enables you to be self sufficient."

Created through close collaboration with thousands of customers, Lexis for Microsoft Office enables users to work more efficiently and productively, delivering greater service to clients. This is achieved by offering seamless access and management of information and services from LexisNexis(R), the open Web and designated law firm or corporate files with the click of a button without ever leaving Microsoft(R) Outlook(R), Microsoft(R) Word or Microsoft(R) SharePoint(R) Server.

"I just saw a demonstration of Lexis for Microsoft Office and wow, seamlessly integrating Lexis analysis and content into the platforms where we, and our lawyers and legal staff spend most of our days is a huge breakthrough," said Carol Gruenburg, Director of Library Services, Miller & Chevalier Chartered. "Add in full text of statutes and case citations that pop up magically in a new window as soon as you open the email or document and the capability of being able to simultaneously search the Web, lexis.com, and your firm's internal documents, and your jaw just drops open! Looks like a winner to me, and we have already signed up for this exciting platform."

"I can see myself using Lexis for Microsoft Office to help streamline and simplify workload," said Ryan Pak, law firm associate and beta tester for Lexis for Microsoft Office. "It's a great product that helps highlight cases and judges, while bringing in the Web component in an easy-to-use manner."

"LexisNexis has a history of collaborating with customers to create new ways for legal and business professionals to do their jobs, find what they need and manage their businesses," said Bob Romeo, SVP, Research and Litigation Solutions at LexisNexis. "Lexis for Microsoft Office continues this tradition by introducing a new era of improved collaboration, productivity and access to information for legal professionals and others - freeing them to focus on strategy, client service and confidently managing legal matters."

How Lexis for Microsoft Office Works

While reviewing an Outlook e-mail message or a Word document, Lexis for Microsoft Office users can seamlessly access vital information and services. Key features and benefits include:

-- "Search" -- A single search box for one-click access to the vast collection of legal content from LexisNexis, the open Web and the user's desktop files. Results are displayed in a window next to the active document for easy review and management -- virtually eliminating the time and effort to switch between the desktop and search sites to conduct research.

-- "Background" -- This function scans an Outlook message or Word document for "entities" such as people, companies, organizations and cases and provides hyperlinks to relevant documents, full text case law, news and other types of information within internal, LexisNexis and Web resources. Upon clicking a hyperlink, information is displayed in a side pane within the Microsoft Office applications. The Background feature also displays Shepard's(R) reports and applies Shepard's(R) Signal(TM) indicators directly to the cases cited within the text of the document. These features benefit users by minimizing the need to go back and forth between multiple databases to collect information -- speeding the process and reducing the risk of missing information when transposing it from one place to another.

-- "Suggest" -- By manually highlighting any text in an Outlook or Word file, the user can prompt a search that will pull up relevant information from internal, LexisNexis and Web resources. The content is displayed in a side pane within the application for use and management for more productivity and efficient work.

Lexis for Microsoft Office is available either through a standard installation with easy to download instructions or through a custom installation and deployment that includes integration of an enterprise document management system or SharePoint site. The custom installation allows a firm to leverage its existing IT investment by giving legal professionals the ability to search all available documents in a single search from within Microsoft Outlook and Word.

Lexis for Microsoft Office is compatible with Microsoft Office 2010 and Microsoft Office 2007 and requires a current LexisNexis subscription. More information is available at:www.lexisnexis.com/office.
